A scene before a thesis
A screen running fine while no one looks at it. The phone system running cleanly while the caller hangs up. A playlist nailing the brand brief while the customer either tunes it out — or, worse, walks out because of it.
The failure mode isn’t a dark screen or a dropped call. It’s the inverse: the layer working perfectly while the customer notices nothing, or notices the wrong thing, or notices it just enough to leave.
What we’ve come to see
Fifteen years of deploying audio, screens, and automated call experiences across thousands of locations teaches you something about that layer: it is not a cost centre.
Every one of those environments is affecting what customers do next — how long they stay, what they choose, whether they come back, what they say on the way out. Most operators have been told to think of this as infrastructure: budget it, maintain it, leave it running. That’s the wrong frame. This is where decisions happen. It’s a revenue instrument — and the operators who treat it that way get different results from the ones who don’t.
Why four companies, not one
The coherence was discovered through the work, not engineered in advance.
The original product was music and on-hold for agencies. The first deployments surfaced a need for in-store music — and after partners proved unreliable, we built RevMusic to do it properly, deliberately substrate-agnostic so it would never lock anyone in. The agency channel began to decline; CubeMC repositioned around the AV building-blocks layer that had always been underneath. CARMA emerged as the modern, direct telephony brand. And when we realised that nobody outside our walls could measure what these touchpoints were actually doing in customer behaviour, Choice Catalyst was built.
Four companies, four problems a customer can come for independently. One conviction running through all of them.
